Miami’s Jacuzzi Boys came out of the surf in 2009 with No Seasons—a hard-partying debut seasoned with vintage garage fumes, psych-punk colors, and sunshine haze. Their follow-up, Glazin’, took a smoother approach, with power pop its underlying life force. On Jacuzzi Boys, the guys retain a retro-vibed, power pop flavor, where the music of acts like Cheap Trick and Mikal Cronin seem to have met up and rolled in the hay. That said, the most exciting tunes here are the filthy, grime-coated “Rubble”—all distorted, double-barreled guitar thunder—and the vaguely glammy “Over the Zoom,” which has a sticky stomp that makes it a real hip-shaker. Actually, poppier tunes like “Black Gloves” and “Double Vision” have such solid backbeats and tightly woven guitar-bass parts that yer groove thang could get a good workout for much of Jacuzzi Boys. With dashes of twinkling acoustic prettiness, bursts of aggressive guitars, bittersweet melodies, and Gabriel Alcala’s honey-coated vocals luring listeners inside, Jacuzzi Boys is an undeniably playful romp in the rock ’n’ roll funhouse and another solid outing for the trio.
