Details
[Edit]Composer, Western flute, and shakuhachi player James Nyoraku Schlefer offers us two of his own compositions, three traditional Japanese honkyoku pieces, plus one piece by Fukuda Rando, a Japanese composer from the beginning of the 20th century. The CD starts with his piece "Solstice Spirit," a piece written for an ensemble of 18 shakuhachis of different lengths. The piece is made up of 10 sections of varying lengths and contrasting styles, going from some form of minimalist music to more melodic and lyric sections, ending with a section of microtonal clusters. His other composition and last piece of the CD is a composition based on "Amazing Grace," presenting us with modern playing techniques for the shakuhachi. Schlefer is a fine shakuhachi player. He shows innovation and originality in his works, with an overall mastery of the instrument. ~ Bruno DeschĂȘnes, Rovi
