James Taylor mixes California canyon folk, light blues, and rock ’n’ roll with some gospel and country here. On the soothing “Soldiers,” Taylor eschews self-reflection and sings eloquently and empathetically of fallen comrades. His plaintive croon tells of wanderlust and discovery on both the piano-dreamy “Highway Song” and the banjo- and fiddle-rich “Riding on the Railroad.” The gospel tilt of “Let Me Ride” emphasizes a lusty undercurrent courtesy of The Memphis Horns, while the droning accordion on “Places in My Past” manages to sound like what nostalgia feels like. “Love Has Brought Me Around” features sharp guitar runs by legendary session man Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar.
