A combination of two recent EPs, The Morning After the Night Before is a powerful collection of tunes from the British band who were once considered, back in the mid-‘90s, among the leading candidates to save rock ‘n’ roll. They’ve continued to make great music that steps away from the anthemic clatter of their early days. Their sound uses electronics strategically to great effect. The first half of this “double album” is a melancholy batch. “Tell Her I Said No” features a gorgeous melody with warm keyboards, a stuttering guitar and a groove that comes and goes with the wind. “Kalediscope” is a simple stroll of a tune, elegant in how the piano notes fill in behind the harmonies. “Rabbit Hole” punches up as a substantial pop song. “It’s Hot” begins the pick-me-up side of the band. “Ten Below” drives straight into the emergency lane with sirens howling. Tim Booth can’t escape the Morrissey comparisons, but he’s plenty tougher on an aggressive tune like “Shine.” It’s a great collection.
