[Edit]British saxophonist James Vargas keeps things mellow and funky on his self-titled debut album. Calling to mind such smooth jazz luminaries as Walter Beasley and Steve Cole, Vargas has a lithe improvisational style and supple tone well suited to the instrumental R&B represented here. Keyboardist Oli Silk, who Vargas previously worked with in Sugar & Silk, shares many of the writing/performing credits and adds a lush Euro-funk vibe. Similarly engaging is Yvonne John Lewis, whose soulful vocals help carry the heartfelt ballad "Say You Will." This is an impressive debut that should appeal to smooth jazz and quiet storm radio fans alike.
