Long before Jane Krakowski became Jenna Maroney on 30 Rock in 2006 she was known as a force on Broadway, winning a Tony in 2003 for her role in Nine. Musical theater is in her bones, so it’s no stretch for her to cut an album of cabaret as she does with 2010’s The Laziest Gal in Town — yet this record’s blend of music, stories, and jokes can’t help but bring Maroney (who would kill for the chance to make a record like this) to mind. Credit Krakowski for creating such an indelible character, then credit her for managing to go beyond Jenna to deliver a record that’s a rollicking good time on her own terms. True, you have to be on her wavelength — to get a chuckle from her Twitter send-up, to smile along with her Betty Boop-ish reading of “Rubber Duckie” — but if you are, The Laziest Gal in Town is knowing fun.
