Details
[Edit]Pearl is widely considered Janis Joplin's masterpiece. Released posthumously in 1971, it features her work with The Full Tilt Boogie Band. Fans should still hold onto their copies of the 2005 Legacy Edition for the live material that isn't repeated here. However, there's now even more fascinating studio material to savor. Studio chatter from Joplin, producer Paul Rothchild, and her Full Tilt Boogie Band mates provides a telling look at the Joplin psyche, and it spices up the nine previously unreleased studio rehearsals (including muscular workouts of "Get It While You Can" and "Move Over" and alternate versions of "Me and Bobby McGee," "A Woman Left Lonely," and "My Baby"). An explosive hi-octane version of "Tell Mama" and a performance of "Half Moon" from The Dick Cavett Show round off the bonus material. The original album sounds terrific, and the addition of the single versions of many of the album's cuts are just sonically different enough to please rabid fans.
