Leroy Justice frontman Jason Gallagher applies heart and soul to Deep Breath in the Desert, a homespun collection of late-night acoustic songs. While his band does a good job at ripping up Southern rock-fueled bourbon blues, his solo offering seems a bit more introspective and low-key, more suited to the fireside than a barroom brawl. Gallagher's admirable growl is reminiscent of other down South vocalists (Chris Robinson particularly), but offers enough originality to separate him from his peers. The opening track, "Promises," sets the minimal tone for the entire album, with mandolin and tambourine accenting the acoustic guitars, while some sparse slide playing breaks up the verses on the title track. At 12 songs and 50 minutes, the album runs a little long without a whole lot of variety from song to song, but fans of introspective and soulful singer/songwriters will cherish every moment.
