Jason Molina apparently enjoyed creating music under obscure monikers that made it hard to follow his career. In retrospect, it’s easier to see the course. The band name Songs: Ohia encompasses many early releases, including the album Magnolia Electric Co.; the band Magnolia Electric Co. covers everything from 2005’s Trials & Errors through Josephine. Three additional albums—Pyramid Electric Co., Let Me Go, Let Me Go, Let Me Go, and Autumn Bird Songs—were released as Jason Molina. All albums are subject to varying lineups and varying availability. As music, Molina’s first "solo" album, Pyramid Electric Co., retains the schematic of previous Songs: Ohia albums. Molina sits down with either guitar or piano and works through a morose set of chord changes that settle on minor keys and unresolved tonalities while he slowly—as in slowly—sings oblique poetry sprinkled like a gospel singer or a field hand singing the blues. “Red Comet Dust” is a test of endurance, but anyone who appreciates the process will find songs like “Division St. Girl” and “Spectral Alphabet” sublime in their purity.
