[Edit]Savory/Penaluma is Jawbox's last indie release, back on DeSoto, the label that launched their debut EP in 1990 when they were a substandard but promising hardcore band. "Savory" picks up where their excellent Novelty LP left off, on solid post-punk ground with droning guitar offset with wall-of-rhythm-section big power. It reminds of some of the rhythmic guitar rock that came out of Chicago and Minneapolis during the '80s (from Big Black to Rifle Sport). And it's good. Edsel also returns to DeSoto after a stint on Merkin, and complement their D.C. A-side pals well. "Penaluna" is, in fact, the better of these two songs, with a swirling production and heavy verse setting up an even better chorus.
