Even in the desperate-to-shock '70s, Wayne County was an exceedingly minor figure, never quite matching the promise of enticingly sleazy song titles like "(If You Don't Want to F**k Me) F**k Off." Going ahead with the operation and becoming Jayne County, she lost the one hook that had made her vaguely interesting, turning her into just another foulmouthed bleach-blonde who can't particularly sing. Wash Me in the Blood of Rock and Roll, recorded live in 2000 — a full two decades after her only interesting work — is the rock & roll equivalent of a suburban soccer mom who had trained to be a ballerina in her teens trying out a few moves at her daughter's recital. The band plays as if it has never even heard these songs before, and County's voice — never an instrument of beauty — is simply shot. And in the age of Eminem, songs about anal sex and "Toilet Love" are well past their sell-by date in terms of outrageousness. This is just sad.
