Jenny Simmons’ solo debut reflects the emotional turmoil she faced after the end of her band Addison Road. The Becoming deals with the Christian singer/songwriter’s struggles to regain her sense of purpose and identity, as well as her strengthened relationship with God. Simmons sounds rejuvenated here, tempering her smooth delivery with an aching edge. Her lyrics are rooted in her own experience, touching on moments of weakness and self-doubt in “Where I Belong” and “The In Between.” “What Faith’s About” and “Letting You Go” make the depths of Simmons’ Christian commitment clear. Buoyant pop/rock arrangements drive her words home, with the sunny, Jamie Grace–like “This I Know” and the life-affirming “Heaven Waits for Me” standing out. “Broken Hallelujah” is a particular high point, summing up the theme of personal revival that lies at the album’s heart. A cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Come Healing” ends the album on a sweepingly redemptive note. Grounded in earthly experience as it looks heavenward, The Becoming stands out for its honesty as well as its ultimate optimism.
