Old-time gospel music is a curious contradiction. Intensely personal, there's nothing proselytizing about its tradition. Songs like those on this album aren't meant to convert you, they're related only as a statement of fact. In this increasingly plastic world, there's something wonderfully affirming about that sort of sincerity. Jerry & Tammy Sullivan have created an album that is celebratory and somber by turns, and delivered with the heartfelt emotion one only hopes to find in church. The best thing about this album might be the pure sound of it. What a wonderful thing it is in this world of N'Sync and Britney Spears to hear two mature voices. What a wonderful thing to hear songs about something besides booty. Old-time religion has a lot of blood and thunder in it. That people can turn that imagery into beauty is a wonderful thing. Long may the Sullivans sing.
