On their eponymous 2001 album (originally titled Bleed American but renamed in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks), Jimmy Eat World finally morphed into the bright and shining radio rock powerhouse that earlier albums had hinted they could become. Their entire career had been building toward the breakout success of “The Middle,” arguably the platonic ideal of a modern rock song. Propelled by that single's energy, the rest of the album skyrockets as though the band caught a magnificent updraft. “Sweetness,” “A Praise Chorus,” and “Bleed American” define their brand of surging and raging but ultimately very sweet rock music.
