This LP features a novel idea that works well. Two different but compatible Dixieland bands play together and separately, each one coming out of a different speaker. Cornetist Jimmy McPartland's group is a septet with Bud Freeman on tenor, trombonist Vic Dickenson and clarinetist Bob Maheu while pianist Art Hodes' sextet features trumpeter Nappy Trottier, trombonist George Brunies and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell. They perform a variety of Dixieland and 1920s standards and their battles (particularly when the entire groups trade off choruses) are quite fun. Trad jazz collectors who run across this LP are well advised to pick it up quickly for it may be decades before it is reissued by Polygram/Mercury.
