A veteran trumpeter, composer, arranger, and teacher, Jimmy Owens has put in an enormous amount of work over the past four decades. He got his start in the '60s playing with legends like Archie Shepp, Hubert Laws, Dizzy Gillespie, and Willie Bobo, among many others. He has toured the world extensively, racked up a slew of international awards, conducted countless educational workshops and seminars, and appeared on dozens of albums. With The Monk Project, he shares his unique take on the music of jazz royalty Thelonious Monk, reinterpreting much-loved classics and semi-obscure songs alike, breathing fresh life into them with his own arrangements. Backed by a powerhouse group that includes Kenny Barron (piano), Howard Johnson (baritone), Marcus Strickland (sax), Winard Harper (drums), and Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), they present us with 10 tracks sure to strike a chord with jazz aficionados everywhere. Everything here is great, but "Blue Monk," "Pannonica," and "Brilliant Corners" are standouts.
