Joan Manuel Serrat began engaging in political activism during the 1960s, when he angered authorities by openly defying the language politics of Francoist Spain. A similar defiance can be heard on 1972's Miguel Hernandez, which he recorded in honor of the titular poet. Using his Spanish folk music as a medium, Serrat wrote songs that criticized the Spanish Civil War, specifically the way people like Hernandez were punished for their anti-fascist beliefs.
