Details
[Edit]The second volume in pianist Joe Gilman's tribute to Dave Brubeck once again has him exploring songs associated with Brubeck in a fresh and creative manner. The material might be Brubeck's (plus Paul Desmond's "Take Five" and Dave's brother Howard Brubeck's "G-Flat Theme"), but Gilman's piano style is his own. He really digs into some of the tunes and comes up with consistently surprising renditions of such numbers as "Summer Song," "Take Five" (which is given one of its most eccentric readings), a delightful "Nostalgia de Mexico," and a partly out of tempo and melancholy "The Duke." With bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Justin Brown playing their supportive roles well, this set is easily recommended.
