Recorded live on March 25, 1976, You Can’t Argue With a Sick Mind marks the culmination of Joe Walsh’s solo career, and serves as a test run for his tenure with the Eagles. As he runs through a selection of career highlights, he is backed by a dream band that provides every song with maximum muscle. The album’s heavyweight assault comes courtesy of a rhythm section featuring bassist Willie Weeks and two drummers — Sly Stone’s Andy Newmark, and Walsh’s own longtime collaborator Joe Vitale. Jay Ferguson and Dave Mason handle the keyboards, while Don Felder joins Walsh for a series of blistering guitar duals. Aside from a swaggering take on “Rocky Mountain Way,” the highlights are “Time Out,” “Turn to Stone” and an electrifying revival of the James Gang classic “Walk Away.” This celebratory live document reaffirms Walsh’s reputation as one of the few '70s rock gods whose heavy riff-oriented attitude was invested with genuine musical imagination. It’s easy to see why the Eagles wanted him.
