John Murry is an unhappy man. And it isn’t an act. It runs deep on his full-length album The Graceless Age, and it continues right here on the Califorlornia EP, where the native of Tupelo, Miss., explores his life in the Golden State. The state gets two songs (“Golden State” and an alternate version of “California,” a key track from his album), along with a Warren Zevon cover (“Genius”) and a tribute to his old producer, the late Tim Mooney (who was best known as the drummer for American Music Club) in “Timmy.” Murry sings with a dark tone that’s often too overwhelmed by either emotion or anger to be bothered with pitch. The brutal guitars on the bonus track “I Need You” turn the track into a modern blues that recalls Neil Young’s work circa On the Beach. “The Murder of Dylan Hartsfeld” starts with a disjointed, bureaucratic 911 call before telling the tale of an Iraq veteran who returned to the U.S. with more problems than ever.
