John Murry’s solo debut album, 2012’s The Graceless Age, immediately received outstanding reviews in the British press, including a five-star review in Mojo, a nine out of 10 in Uncut (where the senior editor called the album “a masterpiece”), and five stars from The Guardian (which labeled it “a work of genius”). The album saw U.S. release in 2013 and rerelease in 2014, as the Oakland, Calif.–based singer/songwriter attempts to build a domestic audience. Murry is a Tupelo, Miss., native who details his near-overdose from heroin in startlingly direct fashion on the terrifying 10-and-a-half-minute piano ballad “Little Colored Balloons.” Vocal comparisons to Mark Lanegan, Josh T. Pearson, and Richard Buckner are warranted, while Murry manages his own emotionally overamped delivery. The Graceless Age was produced by former American Music Club drummer Tim Mooney, who died soon after. Adding the bonus tracks “Yr Little Sister” and “Gary Gilmore, 1977” brings the album to a solid hour of self-exorcism.
