With his work on the 1990 feature Presumed Innocent, John Williams abandoned the larger-than-life orchestration of his best-known soundtracks in favor of a taut, streamlined approach emphasizing mood and nuance. Making his first-ever venture into the erotic thriller genre, Williams pares his music to its bare essentials, creating simple yet elegant melodies that mutate and crumble in concert with the onscreen narrative, employing electronics and atonal effects to convey the gradual disintegration of attorney Rusty Sabich's (Harrison Ford) life and career. But Presumed Innocent is not a score that commands attention like so many other Williams efforts. Its power is far more subtle, revealing its complexity and craft only over the course of repeated exposure, and while some of the composer's aficionados may consider its understatement a turn-off, others will find its uncommon sophistication gripping.
