Details
[Edit]Cecil Taylor has deservedly influenced many freestyle jazz pianists, but it is a pleasure to hear someone on the level of John Wolff Brennan perform with original flair and totally free from Taylor's influence. Brennan not only incorporates the by-now common advanced techniques such as strumming the inside strings, but he combines a wide array of influences into a coherent whole. Drawing on the romantic and new classical traditions and combining them with avant-jazz improvisation, Brennan easily retains interest for the 24 pieces lasting more than 70 minutes. Fellow pianist Marilyn Schroeder joins Brennan on one number, but the highlights abound throughout the album, focusing on Brennan's jagged, angular, and eclectic approach.
