Details
[Edit]Johnnie Taylor was one of the hardest-singing soul men to work the R&B circuit in the ‘60s and ‘70s. He cut his teeth with the legendary gospel outfit The Soul Stirrers, but he really hit his stride in the late ‘60s when he signed to Memphis’ legendary Stax imprint and scored a string of hard-edged funk hits like “Take Care of Your Homework," “Who’s Making Love,” and “Jody Got Your Girls and Gone." By the time Taylor released Taylored in Silk, the onetime shouter had mellowed slightly and traded the frantic tempos of his early hits for a more deliberate deep soul style. The new approach suited Taylor well, and this set of relaxed meditations on love and loss may just stand as his finest release. All of these recordings (with the exception of Taylor’s stylish reinterpretation of Little Willie John’s “Talk to Me”) were cut in Muscle Shoals and benefit from the impeccable instrumental work of FAME Studio's crack session musicians. This remastered edition of Taylored in Silk appends six bonus tracks to the album’s original eight, including the blazing “Shackin' Up” and the extended late-night blues workout “Doing My Own Thing."
