Like fellow Texas bluesmen Albert Collins and Freddie King, the late Johnny Copeland was an exciting performer with a stinging electric guitar tone. He also possessed a delightfully rough-toned singing style and was a fine songwriter. This excellent collection draws from albums he recorded for Rounder Records in the 1980s, a time when Copeland lived in New York and worked with producer Dan Doyle and arranger Ken Vangel. Three electrifying cuts, “Down on Bended Knee,” “Devil’s Hand,” and “Claim Jumper” feature a great band with a big, punchy horn section that includes the jazz saxophonists George Adams, Arthur Blythe, and Byard Lancaster, and New Music composer Garrett List on trombone. “Kasavubu,” from 1986’s Bringing It All Back Home, shows how Copeland sometimes expanded upon his rootsy sound. The track’s percussion-heavy groove is redolent of Africa and the Caribbean, and a guitarist adds a wonderful West African picking pattern to the flow. Copeland sounds right at home on the multi-layered track. All in all, this comp is a fine sampling of one of the last great electric bluesmen.
