Details
[Edit]Drummer Jon Hazilla joins pianist Bruce Barth and bassist John Lockwood for a satisfying trio session. The disc is named for a fairly obscure tune by Clifford Brown, which Hazilla and his cohorts interpret gracefully. The trio also offers readings of "Hello, Young Lovers," "It's Only a Paper Moon," Dexter Gordon's "Tivoli," Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" (in a fast four, without bass), and, to finish, a curiously merged "Misty Night/When Lights Are Low." Hazilla's originals — "Vernell," "Saindo," and "Fractals" — are varied takes on the blues and rhythm changes. Hazilla swings hard and with textural refinement, Lockwood plays off of him insightfully, and Barth burns, of course. ~ David R. Adler, Rovi
