[Edit]José Mauro's Obnoxius is an album of grand orchestral Brazilian pop that only reveals its grace after several listens. Though he's occasionally reminiscent of grand masters like Marcos Valle or Milton Nascimento, in reality the comparisons are misleading. Unfolding as a suite, Obnoxius proves that Mauro's vision of Brazilian melancholia is his own, glimpsed only occasionally in the softer-toned compositions of Jobim and João Gilberto.
