Avant folk songwriter Josephine Foster took a brief detour from her own ghostly compositions when she recorded a few albums with the Victor Herrero Band. Anda Jaleo, the first of these albums, was recorded mostly live in the studio and features Foster singing songs from poet Federico Garcia Lorca's 1931 collection of mysteriously beautiful flamenco tunes Las Canciones Populares Espanolas. The 11 songs here brim over with spirit and romance, while Foster's wandering, wavering voice offering up Spanish-sung lyrics over a host of lively foot stomping, handclapping rhythms, castanets, and traditional flamenco instrumentation.
