Details
[Edit]J.P. Jones is known for his gruff voice and his gritty sentimentality, both of which are in ample supply on his eighth album, Salvation Street. His songs touch on the spiritual, but often tell of streetwise love stories along the same lines of fellow East Coast native Bruce Springsteen, similarly dark and reverent. His songwriting really shines on the optimistic love song "That's Right" (featuring gentle backing vocals by Les Sampou) and on the roving "Dante's Mountain." Interestingly, his rough and craggy voice is best suited when in harmony with the gentle sounds of a female vocalist like the aforementioned Sampou and the beguiling Barb Schloff-Arietta, whose vocals begin the album. Although many of the songs have a very similar feel and it gets bogged down in a few spots, Salvation Street is another strong addition to Jones catalog.
