Tim "Ripper" Owens lived the dream. Judas Priest singer Rob Halford had left the band in May 1992 after the tour supporting Painkiller, and Owens joined in 1996 after years of playing in original heavy metal groups and the Judas Priest cover band British Steel. Owens recorded two studios albums and two live albums with the real Judas Priest until Halford returned in 2003. Live in London is the second concert album featuring Owens and shares a number of Judas Priest classics with the other live release, '98 Live Meltdown—since it's not a Judas Priest show without "Breaking the Law," Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust," early Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi," "Hell Bent for Leather," "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," and "Living After Midnight." This album was recorded at Brixton Academy on Dec. 19, 2001, and it's a very good sampling of the Owens years. Everyone knew he was gamely playing along in a deliberate imitation of Rob Halford's vocal style, giving fans the nearest thing to a Judas Priest performance without the cooperation of its leading man.
