Details
[Edit]On her third album, Julie Elias offers a collection of faith-centered tunes that combine the intimacy of a singer/songwriter project with the vertically directed content of a worship album. Elias—also a TV actress with appearances on Grey’s Anatomy and CSI: NY to her credit—has a silken voice that conveys both strength and vulnerability. Love Rain Down shows some of the unaffected pop sweetness of Amy Grant’s early work, as well as a contemporary attitude reminiscent of Sara Bareilles and Christina Perri. Sparse yet evocative arrangements of such familiar worship songs as Chris Tomlin’s “I Will Rise,” Hillsong United’s “Oceans,” and Jesus Culture’s “Rooftops” shimmer with atmospheric guitars and stately pianos. “You Won’t Relent” (a duet featuring the deep-toned vocals of Justin Adams) and “God Be Lifted High” (an elegantly heartfelt reworking of a traditional hymn) stand out for their yearning intensity and spiritual resonance. Elias contributes two self-penned compositions: most notably the title tune, a smoothly gliding techno-pop track with a lyric inspired by Psalms 36:9-10.
