A nice album of what's essentially Afro-pop at the instrumental core, with some extraordinarily slick Portuguese vocals laid over the top. The guitars and horn section provide a catchy run of riffs. The keyboard players similarly provide a nice backing texture of synth chords. The star of the album though is the vocal work done primarily by the two lead singers, but also by a guest vocalist or two and the chorus as a whole. The saxes can cut out a thick groove from time to time for a slower, reggae-inflected piece as needed, but it's when the instrumentalists return to their simple guitar riffs and horn punches that everything comes together properly. At first listen, there might not be a huge amount to differentiate this Mozambique-based Afro-pop group from any number of the others, but at a deeper round of listening, one might note bits of surprising virtuosity inherent in the combination of Portuguese and African roots (which, of course, isn't all that groundbreaking on its own coming from the former Portuguese colonies). It's the ability of execution that these barefooted players display that sets them apart from other such bands. Certainly, peruse the racks of any given music megastore for comparisons, but be sure to give this one at least one listen.
