Details
[Edit]The pipes of Sydney-based, Edinburgh-born alt country bard Karl Broadie often fall somewhere between Steve Forbert's and Jeff Tweedy's on the likable Nowhere Now Here. Similar in presentation to classics like Wilco's A.M. and the Peter Bruntnell Combination's Normal for Bridgewater, Broadie's second album is remarkable for both its honesty and its depth. Broadie skillfully incorporates mandolin and banjo on the weighty "Keep Me on Your Mind," lends a weeping Clapton-esque guitar to "A Few More Miles" and puts raw, whiskey-soaked emotion into the ballad "Paperback Book." By the time the disc's peak — a beautiful love song called "If Not for You" — rolls around, few can debate the guy's a visionary. Yet underneath it all is an obvious fascination with Bob Dylan. And it all comes to a head on the shimmering "Stranded," a harmonica-fed boogie that lies smack-dab in the center of a timeless album. ~ John D. Luerssen, Rovi
