LA producer Kayzo’s music has always run the breadth of the electronic spectrum, fusing trance stabs and pop and alt-rock vocals to battle-tested dubstep beats with trap and hardstyle accents. But on Unleashed, the follow-up to his 2018 debut album, Overload, he broadens his horizons even further. Just two tracks in, having set the mood with the seesawing melody of “Alone,” he unleashes his most breathtaking hybrid yet, recruiting Arizona metalcore band blessthefall for “Before the Storm,” a song that alternates between trap drums, blast beats, and dubstep breakdowns, all overlaid with larynx-shredding screamo vocals. It’s the most extreme track on the album, but that anything-goes spirit runs through each song here. It’s a vindication of every visionary who has ever said that the future of electronic music lies beyond genre; on Unleashed, that future is now.
