Ten years after Doug Sahm’s fatal heart attack, a consortium of his peers, mentors, and disciples congregated to celebrate the Texas musician’s mighty legacy with Keep Your Soul: A Tribute to Doug Sahm. The song selection is superlative, a good mix of essential and unexpected. Yet even more crucial is the spirit these artists bring to the performances. Sahm had a singular charisma—an unwieldy but wholehearted enthusiasm—that's impossible to replicate, but performances by Dave Alvin, Delbert McClinton, and elder Chicano hero Little Willie G. come close. Tracks by Los Lobos and Alejandro Escovedo highlight the uncanny influence Sahm had on the formation of those artists’ styles, but even better are the songs by Sahm’s Austin peers. It's evident from the way that Jimmie Vaughn, Joe “King” Carrasco, and Freda & The Firedogs handle their songs that they didn’t just love Sir Doug’s records—they were forever impressed by what they witnessed of his onstage presence.
