Trumpeter Ken Watters co-leads this talented mainstream quintet with his brother, trombonist Harry Watters, for a pleasant mix of standards and originals. With a strong rhythm section anchored by pianist Kenny Werner, the group is reminiscent of the Bill Watrous/ Danny Stiles partnership of the 1970s. Brother Harry continues to impress with his remarkable technique, gorgeous tone, outstanding range, and emotion-laden style. He is clearly poised to emerge as one of the leading jazz trombonists on the scene. (Just hear him do Tommy Dorsey on "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You.") Ken, who takes lead billing, is a solid player with a fine approach and feel for the material. A good choice of tunes (including "Autumn Leaves," What is This Thing Called Love," "Body and Soul," and "Over the Rainbow") and excellent solos overcome the sometimes stiff arrangements. ~ Steven A.
