Randy Sandke is known as a superb interpreter of classic jazz, mainstream jazz, and swing, but this ear-opening CD will surprise more than a few listeners. Along with a cast of his regular collaborators (Ken Peplowski, Scott Robinson, Wycliffe Gordon, Dennis Mackrel and Greg Cohen), Sandke adds Marty Ehrlich, Ray Anderson, and Uri Caine. Each man contributed at least one original to the date, with the leader contributing several pieces. His "Inside Out" sounds like something that could have been written by Eric Dolphy, while the moody "Plumbing the Depths" showcases Scott Robinson on both baritone and contrabass sax. Ehrlich's adventurous "Like I Said"; Mackrel's tense, complex blues "Simple Pleasures"; and Peplowski's playful "D.T." are but a few of the CD's many high points; it's easier to say that everyone involved obviously had a great time, and it shows in their performances without exception. Highly recommended.
