One cannot help but be impressed by the variety on this CD. Guitarist Kenny Carr ranges in style from Larry Carlton and crossover to touches of country music, bluesy jams, and solid straight-ahead jazz. Whenever you think you have this program figured out, Carr throws in another original that contradicts your conclusion. While he uses a core trio with bassist Tom Baldwin and drummer Frank Russo, the guest appearances by organist Jon Dryden and particularly tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin uplift the music and add a great deal of fire. In the brief liner notes, Carr said that he particularly wanted to highlight the acoustic bass of Tom Baldwin, which he calls a "vital foundation for my melodies." Baldwin plays fine, but it is Carr, stretching from rockish to introspective, R&B-ish to Wes Montgomery, who is responsible for this continually surprising set's wide array of personalities. Well worth searching for.
