Details
[Edit]Saxophonists Sonny Simmons and Brandon Evans co-lead a trio, with super-percussionist Kevin Norton the third prong. This one successfully hearkens to the loft sessions of the 1960s, where "freedom" was in the air and the only restraints were the imaginations of the musicians. The improvisations are raw, ragged, yet coherent. Simmons and Evans are attuned to each other, and these exciting pieces reaffirm Simmons' place as one of the leading free jazz saxophonists of the 20th century. Not all the tracks are slash and burn, as there is a softer, introspective side at work here, too. Norton is highly effective in adding color and laying a backdrop, his ghostly presence well suited for the trio. Using repetition, melodic invention, and synchronicity, the trio creates one of the more compelling free improv albums of the 1990s. ~ Steven A. Loewy, Rovi
