The debut project from pop-jazz ensemble Kilauea is basically The Rippingtons sans leader Russ Freeman. Led by keyboardist Daniel Ho, the band on their first recording features guest Ripps Steve Bailey, Brandon Fields, Steve Reid and Tony Morales—along with an entire album populated by heretofore unreleased Freeman tunes. As such, Antigua Blue is as delightful, punchy and melodic as Rippingtons classics like Kilimanjaro and Tourist in Paradise, only slightly less adventurous production-wise without Freeman's glowing touch behind the boards. Each tune is naturally an unqualified radio ready success, but it was hard from this project to know if Ho planned on ever becoming a distinctive player on his own instead of lurking in the shadows among the well established LA jazz throng featured here. On subsequent projects, he began growing as a composer and performer, and Kilauea as a result became one of the top smooth jazz outfits of the mid 90s.
