Krokus hobbled through the '90s, an era in which guitarist Fernando von Arb was the only constant member. The band was perpetually seeking a singer to fill the shoes of Marc Storace, one of metal’s most heroic vocalists. Krokus finally solved this problem by reuniting with Storace for 2002’s Rock the Block, which rekindled the band’s glory days at a time when the public was starting to revel in '80s-metal nostalgia. The album features 14 Storace/von Arb originals that not only live up to the band’s 1980-1986 heyday but also revive the '70s hard rock that preceded it. After all, this band came up during the same time as AC/DC, and “Mad World,” “Raise Your Hands,” and “Leading the Pack” are songs that could have made Bon Scott and the Young brothers proud. The best part of Rock the Block is that it’s not just a nostalgia trip. Instead, Krokus revisits a set of timeless metal ideals: rock-solid grooves, big chords, and choruses that ring out like fists banging on a door.
