Details
[Edit]Kurious Jorge is a Puerto Rican/Cuban cat from Uptown Manhattan who hit the scene in the early 90s. Signed to Pete Nice and Bobbito's short-lived Hoppoh imprint, he dropped several great singles, including "Uptown Sh*t" and "Walk Like A Duck," all flaunting his laid-back flow, witty lyricism, and ear for superbly funky production. Released in 1994, his first album includes all of these, plus other favorites such as "I'm Kurious," "Top Notch," and "Nikole." Like the Beatnuts (who provide most of the joints here), Kurious' M.O. is basically all about having fun, hollering at the ladies, big-upping his Spanish Harlem neighborhood, and staying faded on blunts and 40s. The featured guests are all great (MF Grimm, Casual, Psycho Les, and more), and the sample-heavy tracks (reinterpreting Roy Ayers, Midnight Star, and Stanley Turrentine, among others) play like a non-stop party. Kurious never released a proper follow-up, but this is feel-good NYC hip-hop that hasn't lost a step in all these years. Highly recommended for golden era afficianadoes.
