With a reedy voice that at times resembles a latter-day Bob Dylan but at others an early Lou Reed, Kyp Harness creates one tangible portrait after another with a style praised by fellow tunesmiths, like friend Ron Sexsmith, who adds harmony on a few numbers. At times more country-oriented than folk, particularly on "Blessings in Disguise," Harness manages to take portions of certain genres without poaching them completely. Another asset is his delivery, a mix of singing but also speaking moreso than singing in certain instances, which alludes to the Velvet Underground's frontman. Although the first half of the album veers from pop to folk and back, the second half finds its Southern pedal steel footing, culminating in a singalong, "All Roads." An artist whose album makes his possible 15 minutes of fame all the more deserving.
