In 1998, Oliver Lieb released a series of EPs in what he called The Black Series. As you might presume, Lieb wanted to explore darker and less accessible sounds than he had on previous L.S.G. productions like the Volume 2 album from a little over a year earlier. The Black Album compiles the tracks from the three Black Series EPs, conveniently fitting everything on one disc. This is a curious album within Lieb's greater canon of work. You can tell he's trying to be more artistic and creative with The Black Album, though his self-consciousness ironically proves to be somewhat of a problem here. Not your typical L.S.G. album, The Black Album is somewhat of an anomaly and, though engaging, it's not nearly the statement Lieb wants you to think it is. Not the Lieb album to begin with.
