After going for a few urban contemporary touches on I Got the Touch, L.V. Johnson returns to a consistently soul-oriented approach on his third Ichiban release Unclassified. Stronger than its predecessor and every bit as impressive as Cold and Mean, Unclassified sounds like an album the deep-voiced singer wanted very much to make. Recalling the smooth northern soul coming out of Chicago, Detroit and Philadelphia in the 1970s, slow and medium-tempo gems like "Voodoo Woman," "Four Walls" and "Whatever Happened" are retro in the best sense of the word. For fans of classic '70s soul, this heartfelt CD is something to savor.
