Details
[Edit]Divine Love is a very specific collection of love songs — in this case a quite symbolic set of praise to Lord Krishna by Mira Bai, a 15th century female poet from Rajahstan. What's going on lyrically is discussed at length in the notes. It's fascinating stuff, but ultimately this is music and what's to be judged is the sound, not necessarily the deeper meaning of it all; that's for the scholars. Shankar is one of the foremost singers of the Hindustani, or North Indian, tradition (also educated in the Carnatic tradition), and one of its great popularizers. This will only add to her reputation, with some gorgeous singing, crystalline through her three-octave range. The arrangements, with harmonium, sarangi, and tabla and sympathetic and delicate, framing her voice to lovely effect.
