Following in the footsteps of vocalese pioneers Eddie Jefferson and King Pleasure, the team of Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross took the art of jazz singing to new heights by harmonizing while putting across cleverly crafted lyrics that were carefully based upon instrumental solos and band arrangements by famous and well-loved musicians. In 1998 the Giants of Jazz label brought out a Lambert, Hendricks & Ross compilation that skipped their first LP, the overdubbed Sing a Song of Basie (1957) and drew instead upon their next five albums, released between 1958 and 1961: Sing Along with Basie, The Swingers! Lambert, Hendricks & Ross Sing Ellington, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, and The Hottest New Group in Jazz. The composers who are invoked on this stimulating collection include Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Wardell Gray, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Timmons, Randy Weston, Oscar Pettiford, Eddie Durham, Neal Hefti, Juan Tizol, Sweets Edison, Jimmy Rushing, and of course Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Note the additional presence of Basie's star vocalist Joe Williams on the "Goin' to Chicago Blues." For a special thrill, crank up the volume and groove upon this amazing trio's rendition of "Caravan," with Lambert and Hendricks doing up a reed section and Annie Ross as sounding brass.
