Language of Flowers light up a room with their debut album Songs About You on Shelflife Records, released in 2004. "Where You Belong" and "If It's Not You" kick off the disc in festive fashion, with Tara Simpson's angelic vocals leading the way. The Belfast, Northern Ireland band puts its best foot forward on the title track, complete with horns and back-and-forth vocals between Simpson and bassist Coln McCrory. Not a one-trick pony, the band slows down the pace on tracks like "Leaving" and "I Don't Care at All," but it's the upbeat and jangley guitar sound that commands the bulk of the time on Songs About You. The band's spunkier side shows its face on "Summer's Been and Gone," while "Botanic Gardens" finds the group treading in Velocity Girl territory. "Tara Mascara" has an undeniable Smiths' influence to it, but the album is most reminiscent of indie pop giants Heavenly. The elaborate synth sound of "Christmas" brings the disc to its end. Mixed by Jules Chaikin, the album is a promising debut.
