There were two groups of Larks with hit records, almost a decade and one whole coast apart. This collection concerns itself with the original East Coast Larks who recorded for Apollo and Lloyds in the 1950s, rather than the L.A. group that had a hit with "The Jerk." The Apollo Larks were a tight, strong singing group who really could harmonize, as exhibited on tracks like "I Live True to You," "Stolen Love," "Let's Say a Prayer," and the title track. Most revealing, however, is their doo wop stab at Sonny Boy Williamson's blues classic "Eyesight to the Blind." As the first of two volumes, this shines the light on a band who deserve a much wider listening audience.
