[Edit]This live EP is a fantastic acoustic companion to 2005’s Humming By The Flowered Vine. Laura Cantrell opens with a gorgeous cover of Emily Spray’s “14th Street” — this version punctuated by muted mandolin strums providing a balanced rhythm between bursts of dexterous picking and Cantrell’s girl-next-door vocal approach. Cantrell’s own “Khaki & Corduroy” follows with a breezy country-folk ditty where she reminisces about her mid-‘80s arrival in New York City and the friends who came and went over the years. In keeping with themes and thoughts of the Big Apple, Cantrell covers “Letters,” an unreleased Lucinda Williams tune from her late-‘70s New York period musing on a bygone time when people sent correspondences via the postal mail. The traditional “Poor Ellen Smith” is a murder ballad based on real events that happened in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
